In honor of Black History Month, Howard University recognized Dr. Roland B. Scott, known as the “father of research into sickle cell disease.”
Despite living in a time of discrimination when hospitals were only accepting white residents, Dr. Scott persevered and spent his life producing groundbreaking research and advocating for federal funding.
In 1972, Dr. Scott became the founding director of the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease, which remains a key institute for the study of new drugs today. Another major accomplishment was the passing of Sickle Cell Anemia Control Act of 1971, thanks to his advocacy work.
