Driver shortage highlights room for improvement

Driver shortage

The truck driver shortage highlights the need for industry changes to be able to attract and retain the best employees. One of these is hours of service (HOS) reform.

Strict HOS regulations mandate that drivers must take breaks at predetermined times, even if they do not feel tired, and effectively force drivers to become noncompliant later in the run to complete their trips.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is currently considering adding flexibility to these regulations, and TCA urges them to do so. It will give much-needed control back to the drivers to manage their own schedules.
