GMOs, Food Stamps, Crop Prices, and Complicated Farm Bill

by

As President Trump and the next Congress take office, Americans show more interest in food than at any time in the nation’s history.

The new secretary of agriculture will have to implement the law requiring disclosure of genetically modified ingredients in food. Obesity and related healthcare costs remain issues.

The lowest crop and livestock prices in years raise pressures to increase exports. Low prices will complicate writing the 2018 farm bill, which will include debate about whether the food stamp program should be separated from the farm program or the purchase of soda and other sweetened foods should be restricted.
