Protecting free press

by
Sen. Maggie Hassan

Our founders understood that self-governance requires an independent press to allow citizens to engage in free debate and hold government accountable.

But recently, there has been a rise in “fake news” claims against legitimate news organizations and increasing disinformation spread by provocateurs. Perhaps most troubling, the president has called the press the “enemy of the American people.”

Attacks on the vitality of the press are attacks on freedom and democracy. We are overdue for a national discussion about how to support journalism, and I will keep pushing for a robust dialogue in Congress to protect a viable free press.

Senator Maggie Hassan
