Through paid summer internships, high school graduates experienced firsthand what it would be like to have a career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). In the far north community of Utqiagvik, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service hosted 18-year-old Ariel Schneider for an internship that had her working alongside local biologists on an eider breeding project.
Her days were spent walking the tundra in search of eiders and other wildlife to document. Schneider was just one of the 28 students from across Alaska who participated in internships like this, as part of the ANSEP Summer Bridge program.
