It’s a saying as true as it is trite, yet too often we discount it in highway safety. Over 90% of crashes involve human error, but is that such a surprise when, “everybody makes mistakes?”
If mistakes are inevitable, can we ever get to zero deaths by perfecting human behavior? We don’t think so. To eliminate road carnage, we need to design risk out of the system upstream from end-user interactions.
Balconies need railings and pools need fences. Why? Because everybody makes mistakes. Roads need guardrails, rumble strips, median barriers and more to ensure those mistakes don’t prove fatal.
