Connection: U.S. Economic Benefits and America’s Role in the World

Although unclear whether Trump realizes it, he’s exposed an uncomfortable truth. Most trade deals the U.S. has struck have been pursued not for economic reasons but rather strategic objectives.

TPP had far more retired generals sign supportive letters in the New York Times than CEOs. Beyond that, America’s middle class used to feel benefits by way of jobs and economic opportunities for children from America’s role as global cop. That quid pro quo has vanished and thus too enthusiasm for international engagement.

Reestablishing connection between economic benefits for America’s Working Joe/Josephine to America’s international role is now vital.
