Demanding, not asking

by Michael Polzella

When America was in one of its darkest periods, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. rose from the embers.

His nonviolence movement — in the midst of pure hell in the South — took unimaginable courage, unyielding determination and unwavering faith. Though peaceful, Dr. King stated, “We are not asking, we are demanding” that America live up to its promise of equality and justice for all people.

This is an important lesson for today. While the pursuit of justice must be peaceful, it must also be powerful. Dr. King blazed a path of hope. It is up to us to follow that path.
