We need to stop thinking of school safety as something we check off our to-do lists. One law, lock or lockdown drill will never be enough to protect our schools.
Schools need to assess safety needs, take action, audit progress, and repeat for effective crisis prevention, response, and recovery. Safety isn’t a one-and-done item, nor is it the responsibility of just one person or function. We need to foster active safety awareness among the entire community – students, teachers, administrators, staff, public safety and law enforcement professionals, and parents – with a proactive approach to solve school safety issues.
