How students feel about the First Amendment

by

Free expression and the First Amendment are essential to democracy. That’s why the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation regularly funds research to explore how students, future guardians of our rights and freedoms, feel about the First Amendment.

Our recent survey of nearly 20,000 U.S. college students, done in partnership with Gallup, highlights their evolving views. College students believe in free expression but are struggling with a changing society. Do free expression and inclusion go hand in hand? Should anonymity, harassment and even hate speech online be allowed? Students are challenging us to confront these tough questions.
