Restoring faith in our criminal justice system

by
criminal justice system

The First Step Act is good common sense conservative criminal justice reform. It is similar to reforms implemented in tough conservative states. It will make communities safer and families stronger.

The bill consists of two main elements: prison reform to reduce recidivism by encouraging participation in rehabilitation and re-entry programs; and sentencing reforms, which end the Clinton-era crack versus powder cocaine discrepancy and expand the existing mandatory minimum safety valve for nonviolent offenders.

These sentencing reforms will help restore our faith in the criminal justice system by reducing the number of obviously unfair sentences inflicted on nonviolent offenders.
