Fueling the High School Athlete Is a Balancing Act

by
Group of high school cross country runners.

Fueling the high school athlete can be a tricky business. There is no hard and fast rule for the perfect diet.

Some athletes can have milkshakes and cookies, while others have to cut out sugar entirely. The ideal way for a high school athlete to eat for the best performance takes the middle ground and includes plenty of meals, hydration and snacks.

Yes, snacks. While it seems a bit counter-intuitive, small snacks should follow breakfast, lunch and practice. Eating throughout the day ensures enough energy reserves to tackle any practice. Eating afterward allows muscles to immediately restore those reserves.
