The St. Charles Avenue streetcar line has operated in New Orleans since 1835, making it the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the world. Since 1923, the arch-roofed, steel-bodied and iconic green Perley Thomas streetcars have operated on the line’s tracks.
Now the line is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Rumbling up and down the “neutral ground” under a vast canopy of oak trees and alongside majestic homes of uptown New Orleans and the hustling streets of the CBD, the streetcars form a 13.2-mile line that’s become an enduring symbol of charm in our city.
