Important tips for gardening in April:
1. Set the foundation – Prepare the soil. Start by turning the soil over and adding compost, organic materials and fertilizer specific to your garden needs.
2. Know when to plant – Plant cold-weather favorites, like snap peas and lettuce. Herbs are another good choice if the danger of frost has passed. Everything else should be started indoors and brought out when it’s warmer.
3. Cut smart – Trim flowers from bulbs, like daffodils and tulips, after they are spent. Be sure to keep leaves for a few more weeks so the plant can create energy for next season’s flowers.
