When the SpaceX Crew Dragon successfully launched last month, it marked the first time in almost a decade that NASA transported astronauts – both engineers – to the International Space Station.
Joint Operations Commander Bob Behnken holds three engineering degrees, including a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology, and Spacecraft Commander Doug Hurley earned his B.S. in civil engineering from Tulane University.
Behnken points to his Caltech graduate adviser’s recommendation to pair theory with a hands-on approach to engineering. “That’s probably the thing that’s been the most valuable, being able to translate the mathematics or theory into real things.”
