The day before Thanksgiving, President-elect Trump announced South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as his choice for ambassador to the United Nations. Pending her Senate confirmation, what does her departure (and other appointees’) mean for their home states?
As a governor, Haley will be replaced by her lieutenant governor. But with U.S. senators, it gets trickier; with Trump tapping Jeff Sessions for attorney general, for example, Alabama will need a special election in the 2018 midterms.
But in the meantime, Alabama’s governor will appoint someone – and it appears he’s already gotten creative in how he’s narrowing down the field.
