Finding common ground to accomplish the mission

My job as a naval commander was creating an environment for people to succeed and perform the mission at hand.

When you’re deployed in the Middle East or Western Pacific, you don’t turn to the sailor next to you and say, “Are you a Democrat or a Republican?” Our job was to work together, find common ground and accomplish the mission.

As a 20-year Navy veteran, I think Congress could learn something from that approach. Whether it’s protecting health care for hardworking families or bolstering our national security, veterans are equipped to produce bipartisan results that help all Americans.
