Unfortunately, women – especially women of color – are underrepresented in newsrooms nationwide. Yet, we know that diversity in journalism helps us present a more complete picture of the world.
Case in point: The genesis of my book, “In A Day’s Work.” As a woman from an immigrant family, I was drawn to exposing the hard-to-surface stories of workplace sexual abuse among America’s newcomers. I also had insights into these women’s lives.
While a journalist’s background shouldn’t dictate the stories they tackle, it can inform the stories they choose to tell, leading to coverage that’s increasingly complex, accurate and inclusive.
