More women in media leadership means more women’s stories

by
Michele Weldon

Something peculiar happens between journalism school – where women account for 70% – and the journalism profession – where women hold 38% of bylines and credits in print, digital, TV and wire news.

While women are 39% of newsroom employees, women of color are 7.95% of print newsroom staff, 12.6% of local TV news staff, and 6.2% of local radio staff. And women are paid less for the work, according to news out of the LA Times, Chicago Tribune and Independent Association of Publishers’ Employees.

If women hold up half the sky, they need to hold up half the stories.
