As we honor Dr. King’s legacy this month, we in the Congress must redouble our commitment to “loving our [political] enemies.”
We can yet overcome the climate of hostility and rancor that threatens our nation. We must reassert the mutual respect, willingness to compromise, and vision of liberty and justice for all that have sustained America in the past.
We have a calling that transcends political partisanship. We are in a fight for the soul of our democracy. We must again rise above the darkness. As Dr. King reminded America: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”
