I’ve covered politics since 1998. A lot has changed since then, but one thing remains constant: political mood and environment plays the most important role in determining election outcomes.
Republicans are facing serious headwinds. 2017 elections have seen a surge of Democratic enthusiasm. President Trump’s approval ratings remain mired in the high 30s to low 40s. The tax bill, the only major accomplishment of the GOP-held Congress thus far, is unpopular.
A good economy is helpful to the GOP, but it may not be enough to change negative perceptions. A wave is building. Republicans should be taking that seriously.
