As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’m very concerned about making our highways safer. I’m especially concerned about the impact of autonomous cars and trucks and how they’ll interact with human drivers.
But there’s another consideration: I served for eight years as the Insurance Commissioner of California, and I’m very concerned about liability issues surrounding autonomous vehicles. With human drivers, the process is easy: you determine fault, and the insurer covers the liability.
But with autonomous vehicles, where will the liability lie? This crucial question will need a definitive answer before these technologies can gain widespread adoption.
