Even if Melania Trump chooses to stay in New York throughout her husband’s presidency, she cannot avoid the countless pressures and assignments that come with this role that’s both undefined yet highly visible.

And when Michelle Obama said “the door is open” to Mrs. Trump and her incoming East Wing staff, it may be surprising given the divisiveness of this election, but not to those who’ve studied past transitions. In fact, it follows a long history of outgoing and incoming first ladies’ staffs working together – and Mrs. Trump may indeed find solace in reaching out to her predecessors for advice.
