Meat product labels must be approved by USDA before they can be marketed. That process benefits consumers and industry because it ensures a product is accurately labeled and not represented as something it is not. FDA lacks a label approval program, and we have seen first-hand examples of plant-based products represented as meat products when they are not.
USDA inspection of cell-based meat products not only gives consumers confidence in the safety of those products, but their labeling as well.
