Consumers shouldn’t be misled into thinking a plant-based beverage is nutritionally equivalent to real milk that comes from a cow. That’s why dairy producers insist the FDA enforce its own standards of identity.

The leading fake milk, almond beverage, for example, has one-eighth as much protein as dairy. FDA rules are clear that milk comes from an animal, not a powdered slurry of emulsifiers, stabilizers and whiteners.

We’re pleased FDA is exploring how to help consumers understand there’s a difference between plant-based beverages and milk. Transparency will strengthen standards of identity and protect consumers from deceptive marketing.
