Food Safety Modernization Act Reducing Illnesses


Through collaborative advocacy efforts, food companies and consumer and public health groups have secured major advances in food safety policy. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act is a prime example, creating modern, prevention-based requirements that will reduce foodborne illnesses.

These alliances can produce even more food safety gains for Americans, and a diverse group of stakeholders, including Pew and Cargill, recently spent 18 months identifying ways to improve the nation’s outdated meat and poultry laws. Our recommendations provide a range of ideas to ensure that the federal safety system for these products is focused on today’s public health risks.
