Who Plays Video Games? You Might Be Surprised

by Michael Polzella

ESA’s latest research tells an exciting story. In addition to its growing economic contributions ($30.4 billion in 2016), the video game industry is expanding its reach with Americans of all ages and genders:

• Nearly two-thirds of American households are home to someone who plays video games regularly.

• Gamers age 18 or older represent 72% of the video game-playing population, and the average gamer is 35 years old.

• Adult women represent a greater portion of the video game-playing population (31%) than boys under age 18 (18%).
