As many kids and families settle back into the school routine, the future of federally funded nutrition programs is part of the discussion. The Farm Bill, which funds SNAP, is a long-successful piece of bipartisan legislation: farm programs for conservatives and nutrition programs for liberals.
But with Congress so divided, is a Farm Bill still possible? And what about child nutrition legislation, which funds programs like WIC and school meals? The law expired nearly two years ago, but Congress has shown little interest in opening that can of worms. Until then, no one really knows what’s on the menu.
