Through a FFAR grant to the University of Florida, I’m working with plant pathologist Dr. Richard Raid to battle a soil-borne disease, Fusarium wilt, which could affect the 3% of lettuce production that comes from Palm Beach County to east coast markets in the winter.
The first aim of the research is to train growers in managing the disease to avoid the spread of the fungus, find other control measurements and introduce the resistance into Florida lettuce by breeding. Fusarium wilt already devastated lettuce production in the southwestern U.S., Japan and other countries where the fungus was identified.
